Rad Power Bikes Hopes To Lead E-Bike Safety

Less than a week after a court trial date was announced against Rad Power Bikes, the company says future bikes will be Underwriters Laboratory Standards and Engagement certified.

Bike advocates and consumer protection agencies have called on e-bike manufacturers to meet UL or other widely accepted safety standards to address the number of fires and deaths caused by e-bike lithium-ion batteries. Underwriter’s Laboratory, a 120-year-old nonprofit, works “to bring members of standards technical panels into alignment on a common set of safety requirements.” These standards may shock some e-bike manufacturers as UL certification has been widely recommended but not required.
