June 26, 2025

The track and field world was rocked by the tragic death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, who was fatally stabbed during high school meet in Frisco, Texas. On Tuesday, according to CBS News, Karmelo Anthony–17 at the time of the attack–was indicted for first-degree murder. Anthony, now 18, is set to be tried as an adult and if convicted, faces life in prison.

Anthony, a sprinter and long jumper at Frisco Centennial High School,  was arrested immediately after the attack and held on a US$1 million bond. According to CBS, he confessed to killing Metcalf, but claimed he acted in self-defence. Twelve days later, Anthony’s bond was reduced to US$250,000, and he was released from custody; he has remained under house arrest since. Running Magazine
